Christmas Friends

Updated: Dec 8

This is an original children's story that tells a tale of the day before Christmas Eve. It was inspired by a true story and from the three Christmas friends that live in our house.

December 23rd.

It was the day before Christmas Eve. Two more sleeps until Christmas.

Everyone in the North Pole was busy helping Santa Claus get ready for the event of the year. In Santa's toy factory there were elves making presents, others wrapping presents and some writing names on presents for children who had been nice all year long.

Then there were the elves in the mail room checking presents coming in from parents and families all around the world.

You should probably know that these presents were not guaranteed to arrive with the children on Christmas Day. It all depended on how well the children behaved over the next two days.

Yikes.

Santa Claus was at his desk updating the Naughty and Nice list. Elves flew through Santa's window, whilst children slept, to give Santa news about how naughty or how nice their child had been that day.

Mrs Claus was in the stables talking to the reindeers. She liked to do this to keep them calm for the big day ahead. "Dancer, Prancer, do calm down" she laughed, at the two reindeer showing off their dancing and prancing skills in competition with each other. "You really should try and rest".

"They never rest" said Rudolf grumpily as he lay in his stable trying to meditate. His nose flashed red in annoyance. He wasn't normally grumpy but he had a feeling that this year was going to be particularly busy.

"It's ok Rudolf" said Mrs Claus. "I think everyone's a bit too excited today”.

Back on the other side of the world, inside the home of a little boy called Hayden, an Elf, a Snowman and a Reindeer sat quietly watching him eat his breakfast. He had remembered to say thank you when his mummy gave him his food.

‘That was a good start’ said the Snowman quietly to the Reindeer. They were secretly hoping that Hayden was on his best behaviour over the next two days so that Elfie could tell Santa lots of nice things about him.

It was raining hard outside and Hayden started to play on his iPad. Games. Games. Games. And then some more games.

“Time to come off your screen now Hayden” said his mummy. Hayden ignored her and carried on playing.

'Oh no' thought Elfie. ‘He isn’t listening. This is not good. Hayden could be put on the naughty list if this carries on so close to Christmas. What would I tell Santa? Two more sleeps to go.’

“Time’s up Hayden” reminded his mummy.

But Hayden carried on playing all morning, all through lunch and into the afternoon.

The Snowman whispered to the Reindeer. “We need to do something about this”.

“We certainly do” replied the Reindeer. “Hayden is heading straight onto the naughty list if he keeps this up”.

“Pssssst Psssst” said the Snowman loudly.

Hayden looked up from his games and looked around.

“Pssssst Psssst” said the Snowman even louder.

Hayden looked around, confused.

“Turn your iPad off Hayden” whispered the Reindeer.

Hayden looked at his mummy but she was on the phone to someone and not paying attention.

“Turn your iPad off and come and play”.

Hayden looked down at the jigsaw on the floor, the Snowman and the Reindeer were on the mat. He looked at the Snowman and was pretty sure its little carrot nose twitch.

Hayden blinked and looked again.

The jigsaw was a map of the world and he loved it. He started with the outside pieces and quickly found the matching pieces to start making the picture. Jigsaws were fun when you go into them.

The day continued and Hayden had a lot to do. He even helped his mummy with the shopping.

'This is great' thought Elfie. 'I will have some good news to tell Santa tonight.'

When it was bedtime, there was just one problem. Hayden was tired and didn’t want to do his reading or go to the toilet or clean his teeth. All he wanted to do was watch tv.

The Snowman, the Reindeer and Elfie watched sadly knowing what his fate would be. “Oh no’ they all cried at the same time.

But the Reindeer had an idea.

“We can’t let this happen and I know exactly what do’ she said with such spirit that the Snowman and Elfie had no doubt in their minds that she did.

“I am going to pass on my magic and make him be good’ she said.

“You can’t do that’ Elfie warned her. Santa doesn’t allow it. It’s against the rules. The children have to be good on their own.

The Reindeer sighed and tried to think of another plan.

This time the Snowman had an idea and left a book on Hayden’s bed open at a new story. Hayden saw this and decided that he did want to read.

Then the Reindeer turned the tap on in the bathroom so that it was running loudly.

“I think I need the toilet” said Hayden to his mummy. And off he went. Whilst he was in there, he saw his toothbrush had already got toothpaste on it, so he cleaned his teeth before going back into his room.

The Snowman, the Reindeer and Elfie all smiled a sigh of relief.

Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of help from a friend and everything can work out.

Hayden climbed back into bed and fell asleep straight away.

“Did you put magic on the pillow” said Elfie to the Reindeer who was looking a little mischievous.

“Me? No, never!” I think I may have had a little sneeze. I think I have a cold coming. My nose is very red tonight.”

“Me too” said the Snowman and he sneezed so strongly that Elfie flew out of the window off to tell Santa the good news. “Attishoooooo!”

The two friends laughed. “Until tomorrow Elfie”.
