Children's story about a dog called Doodle. An easy-to-read short story for any time of day.

Doodle was home alone, waiting for his owner to come and take him for a walk to the park. She had been out ALL MORNING and had left him in the kitchen with nothing to do. Didn't she know he didn't like being in the kitchen all by himself. Surely she knew that, he told her whenever she went out. Aruuuuuu Aruuuuuu. He did tell her.

Doodle is a golden retriever with bundles of energy. He liked to run and jump, jump and run, twirl and swirl, and whirl and twirl. Whenever he could he would run and run and run around, turning his owner's world upside down. Doodle was called Doodle because he ran around in circles just like a doodle; nothing was out of bounds for Doodle.

His owner, Cassandra, was a friendly chatty lady who liked to stop and chat to everyone in the village when they went out on their walks. Oh how she chatted. He remembered the time they had set off to the park and Cassandra decided to take a detour to the post office to post a letter. Doodle had been in front, eager to get to the park. "Hello Mr Chequers" said Cassandra to the old gentleman who lived on their street. He was standing by his gate watching the bus drive away. "Hello Cassandra, Hello Doodle" he said stroking Doodle on the head. "Are you two off to the park today? Looks like the rain is coming in, you should get a move on".

"Oh yes, she said but we need to go to the Post Office first". Post Office? Post Office? thought Doodle, "no no no Arruuuuu". He needed to run. Didn't she know that? "Arruuuuu". And with that, he pulled on his lead and dragged Cassandra away from Mr Chequers who said, "ho ho, you can tell who's the boss Cassandra" as she was dragged up the road by a very impatient Doodle. "SLOW DOWN Doodle, you're going to pull my arm off" cried Cassandra, but Doodle kept on pulling and running, running and pulling. The children on the bus were laughing as Doodle and Cassandra flew along the pavement, nearly knocking over George the postman delivering a parcel. "Be careful Cassandra" he said, "Sorry George" she called out looking back in dismay at the postman who was holding onto the lamppost in fright, the parcel on the ground. "I hope nothing's broken" shouted George to Cassandra, who was now out of earshot.

They continued to charge through the village, past the pizzeria, bumping straight into Mrs Russo who was carrying a box of tomatoes. The box flew into the air and all of the tomatoes fell out onto the ground, squishing and squashing into the pavement. Mrs Russo was FURIOUS. "Cassandra, Doodle, SLOW DOWN, you will need to pay for this. I need to make my special pasta sauce, what ever will I do now?" "Sorry Mrs Russo, I'll come back later" called Cassandra as Doodle dragged her around the corner.

As they got around the corner they ran straight into Jake, the baker's son, and his friends on their way home from school. Doodle just ran right through the middle of them sending the children flying in different directions. "SLOW DOWN Doodle you crazy crazy dog" cried the children, all of them sitting on their bottoms on the pavement watching Doodle run off into the distance.

Doodle could see the park ahead, he was so eager to get there. Not long now he thought. When they reached the park, Cassandra let Doodle off his lead. Thank goodness for that thought Doodle as he jumped up on her, excited and happy. Doodle ran off, running round and round in circles, jumping up at anyone who passed him. "Doodle SLOW DOWN" yelled Cassandra. Doodle completely ignored her running off faster than ever. She looked up ahead and could see the big black rain clouds above them. Oh no she thought, Mr Chequers was right, it is going to rain.

All of sudden it started to rain. It was not the sort of rain that just trickled out of the sky, this was heavy rain. Very heavy rain. Rain that soaked you in an instant. Luckily Cassandra had an umbrella to keep her dry, but where was Doodle?

Far in the distance, Doodle had found a puddle, he jumped and jumped and jumped in it. Oh how he loved puddles. They were so fun. Jump, jump, splash, splash, Doodle was soaking and very very muddy. He loved it. This is what he had been waiting for.

At that moment, he heard the key in the door and Doodle woke up from his dream. It was Cassandra, home at last. "Arrruuuu Arrrruuuu I've missed you" said Doodle excitedly in dog language jumping up at Cassandra. He had been dreaming about his walk all morning and now that she was back he could do it all again. After all, he had such a good idea of how to get to the park super fast, didn't he. As they were leaving Cassandra noticed a big puddle in Doodle's basket. Poor Doodle, she thought, I have been a long time this morning.

Can you remember who he bumped into? What chaos did he cause for people in the village?
