Heartbreakingly inspired by real-life events.
I am Gunnar. I am glue. I am the most powerful glue in school. Make no mistakes, it's me who makes the rules. Those pesky kids who think they know more than me, think they are better than me and think they are stronger than me, need to be taught a lesson.
I am super strong. I am not a ‘superglue’, but my physical strength multiplied by my unshakable mental strength makes me unbeatable. Those ridiculous tiny superglues can take a hike, they’re not allowed in school anyway. Pathetic. When I put my armour on, I am unstoppable. Don't forget my name or mark my words, you will feel the heat.
You've forgotten already haven't you. Typical. Ah I see, some of you are paying attention.
The children were making arcade games out of cardboard on Wednesday morning in the last term of the year. Like there aren’t enough arcade games, computer games and handheld games already. Games don’t have power. Glue has power.
The classroom was bustling with noise. Kids spread out all across the room, every table covered in cardboard, scissors, glue guns and sticks, pencils and paper.
“Be careful with the scissors!”, reminded the teacher as Sophie walked across the room holding them facing outwards. “Always hold the scissors pointing downwards with your fingers around the closed blades Sophie”. Sophie looked down, corrected how she was holding the scissors and walked back to her table. Her friend laughed as she sat down. Sophie laughed too.
In one corner two boys were colouring in a Space Invaders arcade game and two girls were drawing candy shapes for their game in the other corner. Everyone was busy.
This is a perfect time to strike. I need to show those children who the real boss is around here.
Hayden and Josh were creating their pinball game in the middle of the room.
“OK, you cut the game out, I’ll cut the legs. We then need to make the catapult for shooting the ball and colour in the scoring pad.”
"This game is going to be epic!"
Cutting, colouring what a waste of time, all that planning, they think they're so clever. They are my chosen ones. They are the ones to carry the incredible story of Gunner for the rest of their lives.
Hayden folded the catapult. It looked good and was time to glue.
This is my time. I am getting hotter. I am ready to take control.
Hayden pushed the glue stick one more time.
Gunnar pushed forward, burning hot, flowing out of the glue stick and onto Hayden's hand.
"Owwww!" shouted Hayden, but it was too late.
Gunnar landed on Hayden's leg biting into into his skin, causing him to scream out louder. The other kids turned around.
"This is it, I've got him, this is a battle that I'm going to win". Gunnar laughed loudly as he gained power.
Hayden's leg burned. Everything in the classroom went black. He heard a loud explosion and opened his eyes to see red lava flowing across the floor like a river of burning fire underneath the tables and chairs. Walls and ceilings seemed higher now and giant-sized arcade games took up the whole classroom.
Gunnar stood on top of the pinball machine laughing demonically.
"You're all doomed, you'll never escape me," he declared firing hot glue at the children.
"Ow!"
"Ouch!"
"Argh!"
The battle against Gunnar began.
"Quick, onto the tables" screamed Hayden to his classmates. Children scrambled onto the tables off the sticky floor, grabbing oversized pencils and rulers as weapons.
Gunnar dodged the space invader bullets, skipped over the dance machine and deflected everything thrown at him. The children were losing, it was hot and they started to get tired.
"We need a better plan" shouted Josh, squelching through glue and out of the classroom.
Hayden continued pelting pinballs at Gunnar, hitting him on the head. His eyes glowed red as laughed in retaliation and shot glue back at Hayden. His leg was pink where the glue had burned into his skin.
Jordan booted footballs at Gunnar from his football scorer game but Gunnar ducked and dived, avoiding every shot.
Finally, Josh appeared at the door. He had a bag of ice. Gunnar didn't see him as he battled with Hayden and Jordan.
Sophie hid behind the dance game, its music blaring out. Gunnar couldn't see or hear her either. She grabbed a handful of ice from Josh and passed the bag around the rest of the class. Each child took as much ice as possible, quickly stuffing their pockets for supplies.
The children gathered behind Gunnar holding their ice while Hayden continued to hold the fort and fight him.
"GOOOO!" screamed out all the children together. They ran at Gunnar from behind covering him with ice.
"Arrrrrrghh, arrrgh". Gunnar cried out in pain as the ice cut through his heat like knives. Shrivelling and screaming, he was quickly losing his power.
"You think you're so clever" he wailed as he got weaker and smaller.
"I will be back. I will get you" were his last fading words as he disappeared into nothing.
The children were exhausted. Their games were ruined.
"Wow, we did it. We foiled his evil plan. Gunnar will never rule our school”.
“You were fearless Hayden, I couldn’t have fought him like that”.
“Thanks, you were so quick with the ice, what a brainwave”.
“Ok everyone, how are you getting on with your games?” Said the teacher walking back into the room. She looked around at the aftermath.
“Miss, I need to go to the nurse, I’ve burnt my hand and my leg on the glue gun,” said Hayden smiling through the burn, but pleased he had defeated Gunnar.
