The Elf's Not on the Shelf

Updated: Dec 8

This is an original Christmas Story, especially for children at a magical time of the year. Read at bedtime or during quiet time.

It was the start of December and every year Hayden’s special Elf came to visit him from Santa, to make sure he was being a good boy. This year, he looked and looked for him but couldn’t find him.

Hayden looked in every corner, under every chair, behind cupboards, on bookshelves, under pillows, in wardrobes, in the bathroom, in the kitchen, in the bedroom, in the lounge and in the garden.

There was no elf.

Was this the year that the Christmas Elf didn’t come to visit?

“Mum, Mum, it’s the 4th of December and Elfie isn’t here yet” whined Hayden in disbelief that his special Elfie hadn’t shown up.

“Well have you written your letter to Santa yet?” asked Hayden’s mum.

“Not yet”.

Days went by and still no Elfie.

“Mum, Mum, it’s the 8th of December and Elfie isn’t here yet”.

“You need to write your letter to Santa”. Hayden’s mum reminded him.

“But he’s my special Elf Mum, he should be here”.

“How is he meant to know that you want Santa to come this year if you don’t write to him?”

“But Mum, Santa is Santa he should know what I want. He should also know that I’ve been good all year!”

“I don’t think it works like that, Santa is super busy at this time of year and can’t know what every child wants. That’s why children all around the world write to him, so that they can ask for the things they especially like and hope Santa might see how good they’ve been”.

So Hayden sat down to write his letter, researching on his iPad and making his list.

“I don’t know what to put”.

“What about books? suggested his mother.

“No books. Or learning this holiday”.

“Underpants?”

Hayden scowled and continue looking, finishing his letter and putting away his pen.

That night on the way to bed, who did Hayden find hiding behind the books on the shelf?

“Elfie!” Hayden laughed, delighted that his little friend had shown up.

The next morning, Hayden looked for Elfie.

“Muuuum…the elf’s not on the shelf”.

He looked around for Elfie and can you guess where he was? Elfie was reading Hayden’s letter to Santa.

That day, Hayden was extremely well behaved, got dressed for school, ate all his lunch, did his homework and went to bed on time.

“Muuuum…the elf’s not on the shelf”.

The next morning he found Elfie playing his recorder to Snowman and Reindeer.

Hayden laughed, “funny Elfie”.

The next morning he found Elfie playing with his Ooshies collection. They were all over the floor.

“Naughty Elfie.”

The next day Hayden looked for Elfie and this time found him under the table eating jelly beans.

“Naughty Elfie.”

This went on for days and days and so far Elfie had not been on the shelf since the day he arrived.

He had been on top of the Christmas tree knocking balls off, looking for the big Huntsman spider that had appeared in the living room, in the kitchen swinging off a bottle, wearing Hayden’s academic achievement medal, playing football, making a mess baking a cake and doing a jigsaw really really badly. You could call it not doing a jigsaw.

One morning close to Christmas, Hayden came out of his room to look for Elfie, he couldn’t find him anywhere. He looked all around every room and eventually found him climbing on the bookshelf in the living room.

“Mummy, the Elf is finally on the shelf!”

Christmas morning came and Elfie was sitting on top of his Christmas presents keeping guard. Hayden was very excited.

As Hayden opened his presents, Elfie flew over to the shelf next to his friends Snowman and Reindeer. Together they watched all the magic of Christmas unfold. This was their favourite part of Christmas. They loved watching their chosen child open all his presents, seeing him smile, joining in the moments of complete surprise and all the laughter and excitement that comes on Christmas Day.

It was the 28th of December when Hayden’s friends , Hunter, Robbie and Nickie, came over.

“Hayden!! Your Elf is still on the shelf” said Nickie.

“Yeah he hasn’t gone home to Santa yet”.

“Whoa, my Elf went home on Christmas Day”.

“Maybe he will stay here all year?”

“I’m not sure about that Hayden, he will surely need to go back to Santa soon” said Hayden’s mum.

December 29th:

“Muuum, the elf’s still on the shelf”.

December 30th:

“Muuum, the elf’s still on the shelf. I don’t think he’s going home this year”.

“I think he will be” Hayden’s mum replied wearily.

When do you think Elfie might go back home to Santa?
